(Back to top) BACITRACIN (BacIM®) is an antibiotic used to treat pneumonia and other lung infections. Generic bacitracin injections are available. What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top) They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •kidney disease •myasthenia gravis or other neuromuscular disease •an unusual or allergic reaction to bacitracin or products containing bacitracin (such as Polysporin® or Neosporin® ointment), neomycin, or any other antibiotic, medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I use this medicine? (Back to top) Bacitracin is for injection into a muscle. It must not be given into a vein. You will be given bacitracin by a trained health care provider in a hospital setting What if I miss a dose? (Back to top) •anesthetics •cyclosporine •diuretics (water pills) •muscle relaxants •tacrolimus Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines. (Back to top) Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: •blood in urine •chest tightness, or difficulty breathing •hives •lower back pain •pain or difficulty passing urine •skin rash •swelling of the lips or face Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): •loss of appetite •nausea, vomiting •pain and irritation at the injection site •rectal itching or pain What should I watch for while taking bacitracin injection?
